Recognizing the Signs of a Hoarder

It is safe to say most people have difficulty with cleaning up and decluttering their lives, but in some instances, things go to the extreme. If you’re having a tough time deciphering if you, or someone you know, is a hoarder, here’s a list of signs that might help.

  • The most obvious indicator of a hoarder is their inability to throw possessions away. They are driven by the “I might need this“ mindset and it is hard for them to part with anything they deem might be useful in the future.
  • Hoarders will display signs of anxiety and distress when faced with the decision to get rid of items. This might also lead to them being embarrassed by themselves or possessions and could lead to isolation.  
  • Usually, people with a hoarding problem can not organize or categorize objects they own. They become overwhelmed when they must decide where to put things, and this adds to anxiety and stress.
  • Obsession or paranoia are prominent symptoms, and they are constantly suspicious of others touching their things. Obsession can also manifest into the person being driven to restock items due to fear of running out, or checking the trash for new items, or making sure nothing was thrown away.
  • Another huge indicator one may be a hoarder, is when their possessions become an impairment in their daily routine. This can develop in an assortment of ways such as physical – their actual living space – financially, or health. Continuously focusing on material items can have a negative impact on their wallet or budgeting plans, and many people injure themselves multiple times because of the inability to move safely within their home.

It is necessary to note that hoarding is usually never a problem that surfaces on its own. Its most commonly associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and depression.
